2007 - new works
Committed to the medium of paint over the content or messaging of information, this series of paintings allow me to add depth to my gestural and chromatic arsenal. There is a strong physical aspect to the handling of the paint, very near sculpture which carries through the decisions guiding my colour palette and choice of form. Depending on the scale of each work, a physicality emerges from the surface pulling the reading of the works, as a group, back and forth dramatically.
My commitment to remain present to the possibilities of material over pre-determined uniformity of surface, or style is essential, authentic and innovative, yet full of historical references – it reverses a certain falseness sometimes attributed to easel painting. Like the New York artists of the mid to late forties, I am working toward a type of “process painting” and like Rothko, am almost maniacal about my “finishes” and surface quality.
