Collectively, these works affirm contemporary heroic landscapes – ecstatic, emotive, and necessarily abstracted from specific history and specific place – as expressions of the irrefutable potential of the medium of oil, they explore the high-key possibilities of oil with confidence. There is a transmogrification that goes back to Caravaggio and Goya then forward to Bacon.
